UPSC How many attempts

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination has specific criteria for the number of attempts permitted for different categories of candidates. Here's a concise overview:

1. General Category: Candidates in the General category are allowed a maximum of six attempts up to the age of 32 years.

2. OBC (Other Backward Classes): For OBC candidates, the limit is nine attempts until they reach the age of 35 years.

3. SC/ST (Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes): Candidates belonging to the SC and ST categories are given the benefit of unlimited attempts, with the age limit being 37 years.

4. EWS (Economically Weaker Sections): Candidates under the EWS category are permitted six attempts, similar to the General category, with the age limit being 32 years.

5. PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities): For PwBD candidates, those belonging to General and OBC categories are allowed nine attempts, and those from SC/ST categories have unlimited attempts. The age limit for PwBD candidates is 42 years.

It's important to note that the attempt count is only affected if a candidate appears for the Preliminary Examination. Just applying for the exam without actually appearing does not count as an attempt.

These attempt limits reflect the UPSC's approach to providing equitable opportunities to candidates from various backgrounds, ensuring fair competition while acknowledging the need for social inclusivity. Remember, the journey to clear the UPSC exams is demanding and requires a strategic and dedicated approach, irrespective of the number of attempts available.

The above information is based on the latest guidelines and may be subject to changes. For the most current details, it's always advisable to refer to the official UPSC notification.
